Watermelon is a delicious fruit that needs to be an indispensable part of those sunny days of summer at the beach, since this fruit refreshes you with just a bite!
And also, some little watermelons can make a simple pair of swim trunks become more attractive by just being part of its design!
And you might be wondering why we use “watermelon” and “attractive” in the same sentence, well, believe it or not, but they have a lot in common. But let’s find out why, shall we?
Watermelon has natural components like Viagra
In recent years, researchers have discovered that watermelons may be a natural Viagra, or at least they have natural components that are similar to the ones that Viagra has. And that's because the popular summer fruit contains more of an amino acid called citrulline that the previous amount that experts believed. This component makes you feel relaxed and dilates blood vessels much like Viagra and other drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
"We have known that watermelon has citrulline," were the words of Bhimu Patil, PHD, director of the Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center at Texas A&M University, College Station. And after recent studies, he tells WebMD, scientists are now discarding the previous thought which stated that most of the citrulline was found in the watermelon rind. Now Patil states that "watermelon has more citrulline in the edible part than previously believed.”
But how is it possible for watermelon to be a natural Viagra? Well, the process is that the amino acid citrulline is converted into the amino acid arginine, Patil says. "This is a precursor for nitric oxide, and the nitric oxide will help in blood vessel dilation."
In a few words, and without a lot of scientific terms: watermelon can work as a natural Viagra. This means that it can improve your sexual life, right? Well, not quite true.
So, even though arginine is necessary to create nitric oxide, and nitric oxide is required to dilate blood vessels, thus producing an erection, "that doesn't mean eating something that is rich in citrulline will make enough arginine that it will lead to better penile erections," Goldstein says.
The true of watermelon
In conclusion, calling watermelon a natural Viagra is "clearly premature," says Roger Clemens, DrPH, adjunct professor of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and a spokesman for the Institute of Food Technologists.
Since the amount of watermelon that needs to be consumed in order to boost blood levels of arginine is immense, he adds. Following the results of a study published in 2007 in Nutrition, he says, volunteers who drank three 8-ounce glasses of watermelon juice daily for three weeks boosted their arginine levels by 11%. Not a huge number to make a big impact in our body.
But this is not bad news! It’s the beginning of getting to a future in which just eating watermelon can boost, at least to a certain point, your sexual life.
And well, scientists won’t deny the fact that swim trunks with watermelon stamps have in other eyes, because from one way or another, watermelon will make your passionate moments better!
