Are Board Shorts Swim Shorts?

Board shorts have become a staple in beachwear and water sports fashion, but many people still wonder: are board shorts swim shorts?

In a way, you can say that the answer is both yes and no. However, this might be a little bit more complex than that. And this is because it depends on how you define swimwear and what you’re looking for in performance and comfort.

So, in order to answer whether board shorts are swim shorts or not, here at Bermies we’re now writing about what they are and some aspects about them.

What are board shorts?

Board shorts are shorts that were born in the surfing community. Because of that, they were designed to work well and resist. That’s why, they tend to be made from quick-drying textures. However, their most distinguishing feature is their longer cut that extends to the knee or just above it.

In contrast with common swim trunks, board shorts come with a flat waistband with a lace-up front and no elastic. With these characteristics, they stay secure during active movement in the water.

For sure, these shorts are ideal for surfing, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, and more. In addition to that, their sleek design diminishes drag in the water and reduces chafing.

Swim shorts or not?

Considering these shorts were born for surfing, then yes, board shorts are a type of swimwear! In fact, they’re designed to be worn in the water. Besides, they are made from materials that dry quickly and resist salt and chlorine.

However, they differ from swim shorts or trunks in several ways. For starters, they are longer and often have a slimmer fit. Moreover, they come with a drawstring closure instead of elastic. Besides, they aren’t good for casual swimming, only for performance and style.

Therefore, board shorts are not always the ideal option for swimmers, even though you can swim in them. For that, swim trunks can be more comfortable and straightforward.

Do board shorts have a liner?

Whether board shorts come with a liner is one of the most often asked topics regarding them.  The answer? Well, they usually don’t.

That’s because board shorts tend to be unlined, in contrast to swim trunks. However, this design decision was made on purpose since it lowers friction and increases mobility. For sure, that’s a pro for surfers!

For other people, though, the absence of a liner can be a drawback. In fact, board shorts might not feel as safe or comfortable for some activities without that additional layer. Thus, in case you want swim shorts with a liner, a pair of swim trunks is a better option!

Now, by taking all of this into account you don’t have to ask the question: “are board shorts swim shorts?” again. In essence, they are swim shorts, for sure. However, they are different from traditional swim trunks.

But in case you want a pair of board shorts or swim trunks, at Bermies, you can find both!
